6 Healthy Snacks For The Afternoon Munchies

bananas and apples are healthy snacks

You know you get the afternoon cravings for another cup of coffee or a piece of that cookie cake that’s leftover in the break room. Resist the urge! Opt for something a little less infested with sugar and a little healthier. Here are 6 great alternatives to sugary snacks for when you get the afternoon munchies and you’re jonesin’ for a cookie.

1. Banana

Bananas are a great alternative to that cookie that you keep eyeing. Bananas have a ton of potassium which is something your body needs to refuel throughout the day. If you work out a lot, bananas will also help curb those muscle cramps from happening to your calf or foot every night.

2. Apples

Did you know that apples have a ton of caffeine in them? It’s true! You will get way more of a caffeine boost from eating one apple than by drinking a whole can of soda. So if you are feeling glum or tired around 2 PM, grab an apple! They are also excellent sources of protein and vitamins. You know what they say, an apple a day keeps the doctor away!

3. Nuts

Get ready for this: nuts are great at blasting belly fat. Will you go out and buy some nuts now? Good! Eating a handful of nuts can increase your metabolism and give you a big energizing boost in the middle of the day. Another great thing about nuts is you don’t need to eat a lot of them to feel full. Walnuts, peanuts, and almonds are some excellent choices for a healthy alternative to cake your office has for that coworker’s birthday party. Put down the plate and grab some nuts!

4. Kettle corn

Instead of heating up a bag of buttered popcorn, opt for the healthier route with some kettle corn. I used to work in an office that had these mini kettle corn bags that only had about 100 calories a pop! Kettle corn is low in fat and calories and it helps curb your craving for something sweet. Be careful not to make too many bags of kettle corn, though. They can get quite addicting!

5. Cereal

You don’t have to grab a bowl and pour yourself some milk and cereal, but a great afternoon snack is a bag of dry cereal. Some of the healthier options are Cheerios, Wheaties, or anything that has granola in it. Try to stay away from those boxes of cereal that have chocolate coated bits and are drowning in sugar. It will inevitably make you sleepy an hour after you eat it!

6. Water

I know, it’s so hard to drink eight full glasses of water a day. But if you do, you are far less likely to overeat. There are so many benefits to drinking water. Sometimes your body is really dehydrated but mistakes that feeling for being hungry. The only thing it recognizes is that it needs to refuel. How do you usually refuel? With food, of course! But try this, next time you are dying for a piece of chocolate cake, drink a full glass of water. Wait about twenty minutes and see how you feel. It takes longer for your brain to catch up to your stomach. If you are still feeling hungry, grab one of the aforementioned healthy afternoon snacks!
