As a parent you might know how it feels to have a child suffer from head lice. With kids playing closely with each other at school, or sharing the same hear accessories, head lice can often spread easily among them; it can be challenging to get rid of, and with so many products on the market people often don’t know which ones to choose. Luckily there are a few great home remedies available that are safe and effective in treating head lice.
Sometimes when your child has head lice, all you need to do is to comb through their hair every day for a few weeks until they are completely gone. However there are a few easy home remedies that you can try to make it more effective. Almost all home remedies rely on suffocating lice and in general it is more effective and safe to use home remedies than using a variety of harsh chemicals and products. Experts believe that combining treatments at home is a good remedy, and it generally works better than simply using products that suffocate the lice as they only make it easier for them to be caught in a comb.
Comb and Oil Treatment
Start by coating the hair with almond or olive oil. You may have to re-apply the oil as you comb to ensure that there is sufficient oil on the hair. Separate the hair into small sections and use a hair clip if needed to take the hair out of the way. Make sure that you have enough lighting when you work and rinse the comb out regularly under hot water as you work along.
The second part of this method involves shampooing your child’s hair, rinse out, and repeat. Also make sure that you also wash all the towels and combs that you have worked with. To make sure you clean towels effectively, you can soak it in a solution of 10 percent bleach and 2 percent Lysol solution. You can also soak combs in vinegar or boil them in water for 10 minutes. You can follow this procedure for a week and comb through your child’s hair every night to make sure the lice are gone.
Essential Oil Treatment
There are a number of essential oils that can be very effective along with combing, to eliminate head lice. Although rare, some children may be allergic to some oils, so before you use any, put a small drop on the back of their hand to make sure there are no reactions. Tea tree oil is a very popular choice, along with lavender oil, clove oil, aniseed oil, and peppermint oil. Use these oils, either one or a combination of oils, and comb the hair through thoroughly to remove lice effectively.
Mix 2 ounces of olive oil with 15 or 20 drops of your chosen essential oil. Apply to the scalp with the use of cotton balls and leave it overnight. You can also place the mixture in a spray bottle with 4 ounces or rubbing alcohol and spray as needed, leaving on the scalp for at least 12 hours at a time.
The following morning remember to comb out your child’s hair thoroughly and then shampoo, rinse and repeat. You can keep the alcohol and essential oil spray as a preventative measure, and always comb out the hair as often as possible to ensure that all the lice are gone.
Finding an effective treatment for head lice is easy as there are so many different products on the market today. Home remedies are often a better choice as they don’t contain harmful chemicals and harsh products, making them safer to use on your children’s scalp.
